【単語】欠点や欠陥のあれこれ：fault, defect, drawback, shortcoming, weakness
「性格の欠点」「機械の故障」「計画の欠点」・・・日常会話でもビジネスでも、「欠点」「弱点」に関することって使うことありますよね。
今日は、下記のエッセイでも記載していますが、

fault, defect, drawback, shortcoming, weaknessの使い方をご紹介します。
いずれも可算名詞です。
基本的に、
・人の性格に対する欠点
・機械などの故障
・物や物事の欠点
・計画などで上手くいかないこと
などに使われます。
でも、単語によっては上記にあてはまらないものもありますので、表にまとめました。
「ー」部分が、あてはまらない、つまりその意味では使われないようです。

◆fault
【人の性格】She doesn’t know what her partner’s faults are.
（彼女は、恋人の欠点をまだ知らない）
【機械の故障】This food processor has a fault in its sensor. The sensor doesn’t work now.
（このミキサーのセンサーが故障していて、反応しない）
※faultは名詞なので直訳は「故障がある」ですが、自然な訳にするため、故障していると書きました。
【物の欠点】The fault in this painting is there are too many colors in it.
（この絵の欠点は、色がありすぎることです）
【計画など】The fault in the plan was that some risks were not accounted for.
（この計画の欠点は、リスクが考慮されていなかったことです）
◆defect
【人の障害】After the car accident, he developed a defect in his legs and became disabled, so now he is a wheelchair user.
（車の事故で彼は足に障害を患い、障碍者となってしまい、今は車いすを使っています）
【機械の故障】The defect in the gadget was the reason I asked for a refund from the seller.
（ガジェットの故障が原因で、販売者に返金を求めた）
【物の欠点】The company’s case was sent to prosecutors out of tremendous defects in their products.
（その会社は商品に非常に多くの欠陥があったため、書類送検された）
【計画など】The defects of our program is that it won’t succeed without enough budget.
（私たちの計画の弱点/上手くいかないことは、おそらく十分な予算がないことで成功しないことだろう）

【物の欠点】The cosmetic is way too expensive, but it doesn’t have any drawbacks at all.
（この化粧品はあまりにも高すぎるけど、一つも欠点がない）
The drawback of this condominium is, it’s way too far from the nearest station.
（このマンションの欠点は、最寄駅から遠すぎることですね）
【計画など】The construction work has been stopped because some construction plans were found to have drawbacks.
（建設計画に欠点が見つかったため、その建設工事は中止されている）
◆shortcoming
【人の性格】His only one shortcoming is that he is full of himself!
（彼の唯一の欠点と言えば、偉そうで上から目線のところです）
【機械の故障】×
【物の欠点】The drama’s shortcoming is its poor choice of the actor to play the main character. If the main character is not her, the drama would have become more famous.
（このドラマの欠点は、主役の選定です。もし主役が彼女でなければ、もっと視聴率があったでしょう）
【計画など】The customer visit plan has a shortcoming. The train transfer plan is wrong, so the plan can’t go smoothly.
（この顧客訪問計画には一つ欠点があります。電車の乗り換えが悪いのでスムーズにいけません）
◆weakness
【人の性格】My weakness is, being too shy to speak in front of many people.
（私の性格の欠点は、多くの人で話せないほど恥ずかしがりやなところです）
【機械の故障】The weakness of the device is it cannot function without the internet.
（その装置の欠点は、インターネット接続なしでは機能しないことです）
【物の欠点】I’m writing about the weakness of this movie.
（私はこの映画の欠点について書いているところです）
【計画など】The weakness of this plan is that it doesn’t have a back-up.
（この計画の弱点は、バックアップスケジュールがないことです）
