【単語】worth, worthy, worthwhile, deserve
worth, worthy, worthwhile, deserveは意味が似ていて、「～の価値がある」「～に値する」このように使われます。
worth, worthy, worthwhileは形容詞ですが、deserveは他動詞です。

まずは、「worth」から説明しますが、定義としては「良い結果を生み出す、希少性がある、物事が自分にとってためになる」などを指すので、positiveな意味として使われます。もう一つ、「worthwhile」もよく似ていますので、この2つからご説明しますね。
| ◆worth 【wə́ːrθ】形容詞：～の価値がある
※物（物事）の金額や、価値を指します（the amount or value of something） This book is worth $100. この本は100ドルの価値がある。 This job is worth challenging. この仕事はやってみる価値がある。
◆worthwhile【wə́ːrðhwáil】形容詞：～の価値がある ※特に「時間、金や労力をかける価値がある」というニュアンスがあります（worth the time, money or effort spend）
さて、質問です。 This book is worthwhile. 同じ意味として、This is a worthwhile book とも言いますが、 これらはどういう意味だと思いますか？
そのまま訳すと「この本は価値がある」ですね。でも「どんな価値があるの？」という具体的な詳細はありません。 しかし、 “worthwhile”には時間・お金・労力をかける価値があるという意味があるので、 「この本は時間をかけて読む価値がある」とか「この本は高い金額でも買う価値はある」とか、時間・お金・労力をかける価値があるという意味になります。
英会話の先生からのコメントですが、“worth while”という2語も同じ意味なのですが、あまり使われないようです。
もう一つ！”worthwhile”→ “worth someone’s while”もOKです。誰か特定の人を強調する時に使われます。 「あなたの時間」、「私たちのお金」、「彼の労力」とかですね。
例えば ・This book is worth your while. ・This book is worth his while. ・This book is worth our while. とかです。 |
Worthwhileはworthと同じく形容詞で「～の価値がある」という意味ですが、
単に価値があるというだけではなく、「時間・金・労力をかける価値がある」というニュアンスがあるのはお分かりいただいたと思います。
そして、worthwhileと同じ意味として”worth while”という2語も存在しますが、あまり使われないようです。
もう一つ、worthとwhileの間に「人」が入ることもあり、「worth (one’s) while」誰々の時間・お金・労力を費やすだけの価値がある、ということもお話しました。

このように3パターン使えます。しかし！ルールがあります。

1.It is worth reading this book.（×to read ..） ✴ルール：worth＋～ingの形で、worth to do は使いません。
2.This book is worth reading. |
| 【worthwhile】この本は（時間をかけて）読む価値がある。
1.It is worthwhile to read/ reading this book. ✴ルール：worthwhile＋～ingの形も、worthwhile to doの形も、両方OKです
2. Reading this book is worthwhile.
3. This book is worthwhile to read/reading. ✴ルール：間違いではないのですが、ネイティブはシンプルに This book is worthwhile.と言うようです。
4.It is worth your/his/our while to read this book. ✴ルール： “It is worth your/his/our while reading this book. は間違いではなさそうです。 でもどちらかというと、次に挙げる Reading this book is worth your while. こちらの方が良いようです。
5.Reading this book is worth your/his/our while. |
次に、罰を受けるというネガティブな意味でも、賞賛に値するというポジティブな意味でも両方に使える単語「deserve」「worthy」についてご説明します。
