単語「envy」「jealousy」の違い
“I envy you”とか”I feel jealous of you”とか似ているようで使い方も違うし、何が違うの？って思った人に向けた説明です。
ひと言でいうと、「羨ましい」という前向きな表現か、「嫉妬する」というマイナスな感情かの違いです。

◆動詞：envy ◆形容詞： envious
これらは、誰かが持っているけど自分は持っていない、私も欲しいなぁ、有ったらいいのになという切望で、「羨ましい」という感情です。 These mean that desire for something that someone else has and you do not.
例文：私は彼女の物が羨ましい。 ・I envy her property. ・I’m envious of her property. |

これらは競争心や対抗心、嫌疑といった感情です。自分の立場が危うくなったり、誰かに取られそうで不安になるような状況で、よく親密な人間関係に起こり得る、典型的な三角関係などにある「妬み」や「嫉妬」を意味します。 These are usually related to rivalry, or unpleasant suspicion. Jealousy describes a feeling of protectiveness or insecurity you have over a rivalry or being replaced. This typically happens in a significant relationship and requires three people (you, the significant person, and another).
例えば、自分の彼氏が、別の女性とイチャイチャしていたりすると、沸き起こる感情「嫉妬」です。きっとあなたは嫌な感情が出たり、ショックを受けたり、怒ったりしませんか。自分の愛する恋人に近づき親しげに接する女性がいたら、彼が取られるんじゃないかって不安になったりするかもしれませんね。 For example, if someone flirts with your boy- or girlfriend, it produces jealousy. You feel resentful, hurt, and angry that person is flirting with someone you love. You might even start to worry that person can and will replace you.
例文：彼女は私が上司から褒められたことに嫉妬している。 ・She is jealous of my boss’ appreciation of my work. ・She has/feels/shows/exhibits jealousy towards my boss’ appreciation of my work. |
つまり、「envy」は何かを望む感情＝羨ましいに対して、「jealousy」は対抗心や取られる恐れなど人に対するマイナスな感情を表します。
My idea is, envy shows longing for something, on the other hand, jealousy usually reflects rivalry or fear of being replaced, hence you feel negatively towards the person.
