【単語】「不運」のさまざまな言い方
「今日は不運なことがあったなぁ」など「不運」って単語がありますね。
今日は英語で「不運」ってなんて言うかの紹介です。
いろいろ言い方がありますが、一つ面白いなあ！と思ったことがあったので、取り上げてみました。
【不運の言い方】※すべて不可算名詞です
| ■bad fortune
例）Today, I struggled with bad fortune. （今日は不運と闘った。） |
| ■bad luck
例）Bad luck will follow good luck, and good luck will follow bad luck. （幸運のあとに不運が続き、不運のあとに幸運が続く。） |
| ■misfortune
例）Everyone may experience misfortune. （みな不運を経験するだろう。） |
～ポイント：「unlucky」は必ずしも「不運」という意味ではありません～
| “unlucky”という単語、実は勘違いしやすいんです。
結論を言うと、「bad luck」ほどの不運でもなく、その他「あいにく」という意味もあります。
“形容詞“unlucky”は「幸運ではない」という意味ですが 必ずしも「不運」という意味ではありません。 例えば、”She was unlucky and never won the lottery.” 彼女は運がなく、くじに勝ったことは無かった、という文を見ても、 「運がない」だけで、別に悪い状況（不運）というわけではありませんね。 （Unlucky is not luck but it doesn’t always mean bad fortune. It just means you’re not lucky. For example. She was unlucky and never won the lottery. Not lucky but not in a very bad situation.）
もちろん“unlucky”には“bad luck（不運）”という意味も含まれますが、 別の意味があり、それが“bad timing（タイミングが悪い）”という意味です。 （Although it is included “bad luck”, but there is the other meaning, something like bad timing.）
例文： It’s unlucky that he just went out, and won’t come back until tomorrow. Could you come here tomorrow again? 彼ならあいにくちょうど出て行ったところで、明日まで戻らないですよ。明日またここに来ていただけます？ |
