お金って本当に大事ですよね。お金があったら〇○を買うのに・・・なんて思えるものは、いずれ買えるでしょう。 でも、お金があったとしても、絶対買えないものがあります。 それについて、少し考えてみませんか？   今回の英語のポイントは、「お金」にまつわるイディオムです！

Title: Can We Buy Everything With Money?

 

In one of my most loved and very famous Japanese comic, Ushijima-kun, the protagonist, Mr. Ushijima who is a loan shark, also said, “Money isn’t everything, but everything needs money.” – which I very much agree with. Yes, money is important to live in this world.

私の大好きな日本の有名な漫画の一つ「闇金ウシジマくん」の中で、主人公の丑嶋が言った言葉に「金が全てじゃねぇが、全てに金が必要だ」があります。有名なセリフの一つでもあり、私も名言だと思っています。生きていくにはお金が必要です。

 

I believe for some people, “money talks” or “money makes the world go round”. Indeed, in some cases, money is everything. For as long as we live in this world, money is crucial for survival, and it’s difficult to live without it or with little of it. Money is truly an important aspect and necessity in life.

よく「世の中、お金がすべて」「世の中はお金で回っている」なんて言いますけれど。確かに、お金がすべて・・・とは言えませんが、お金がないと生きていけませんし、生活するには大事で、必要です。

 

But, there are things that money cannot buy. Today, I would like to discuss what money can buy and what even money cannot buy.

とはいえ、お金では買えないものって、ありますよね。今回はお金で買えるもの、買えないものについて議論したいと思います。

 

For example, our precious and priceless memories from our past. So if a person, no matter how rich he or she is, wants to have happy memories, no amount of money can buy someone else’s memories and make it their own. Even our current advanced technology cannot obtain this objective.

例えば、過去の思い出。とても貴重でお金には代えられないような・・・。どんなにお金持ちで、お金に糸目をつけないから、あなたの幸せに満ちている思い出（記憶）を売ってくれないかと言われても、売れないし買えません。現代技術を駆使しても無理でしょうね。

 

Another thing money can’t buy is “true love”. There are different forms of love which can be bought, especially if someone is fixated on “money” only. Someone can get married for wealth, and many young women do marry rich old men. In such cases, money can buy a certain kind of love, but remember, it is not “true love”.

もう一つ、「本当の愛」もお金では買えないものです。もちろん、お金で買える愛はあります。例えば「お金」だけに固執して、お金目的で資産家と結婚する。これはお金で買える愛かもしれませんが、「本当の愛」とは言えないですね。

 

As for time – well, I guess we can buy time because now days there are many physical things that save us time, such as gadgets, equipment and even services. Some of the most popular time savers are our PCs, phones, trains, Amazon and Rakuten accounts, etc.

では、「時間」はどうでしょうか？お金で「時間」を買う・・・は可能だと思います。時間の節約になる、いわゆる時短効果のある電子機器類－PC、携帯電話、電車など、やオンラインのサービス―アマゾン、楽天など、なんて言うのは、時短に繋がります。

 

Next item: Happiness. Some people might say, “We can’t buy happiness with money” but “happiness” in some circumstances may be based on “money”. There are many materialist things that can make us happy. Traveling, gadgets, experiences and food, all can be accessed with money and make us pretty happy for a time.

次は、「幸せ」についてです。「幸せは、お金では買えない」と言う人もいます。でも、ある意味、「お金で買う」状況もあると思いませんか。周りを見渡してみると、自分を幸せにしてくれる物に囲まれてる・・・なんて気づく人もいるでしょう。旅行、電子機器、経験、食べ物・・・すべて「お金」で買ってきたもので、「（旅行）楽しかったなぁ」とか「これ、買ってよかった！私幸せだわー」なんて、思ったものはございませんか？ただ、これらの「幸せ」は一瞬かもしれませんが・・・

 

How about health? Well yes, it is very difficult to buy a “healthy body”, no matter how much our technology has progressed over time. There are still illnesses that aren’t curable with medicine or technology so money will only go so far in helping us with our health.

さて、「健康」はどうでしょうか？実際、「健康な体」をお金で買うのには限度がありそうです。いくらお金を用意しても、先端技術を使っても、「現代医療では治療できない」という病気も存在します。お金は健康になる助けにはなります。

 

The next one is a good personality. I think we can buy our personality. Personality is not something we are born with, it’s something that is acquired and developed. It is accumulated over the course of our life. It is greatly influenced by our environment, people around us, and decisions we make. So the amount of money we have will influence our life style and so it will indirectly develop our personality.

「良い性格」はお金で買える、と私は思います。性格は、どちらかというと生まれ持った先天的な要素よりは、生きている過程で身について育んでいくものだと思います。生活する環境、付き合う人（友人、恋人など）によっても変わりますし、決断すること、判断することによっても形成されます。ですから、生活上のお金の使い方によって、性格が左右されると思います。

 

Next, “Talents and Abilities”. I think this is very difficult to buy. Unlike personality, talent is something we are born with or inherit. As they say, it is a gift from God, or from your parent’s good genes for that matter. Although it may be difficult, and may take a lot of time and effort, there is a chance to acquire talent by developing skills through hard work which may take a certain amount of money to be able to do. But, this will entail a lot of hard work and dedication, not just money.

では、「才能」について考えてみましょう。これは・・・お金で買うのは難しく感じます。性格とは異なり、生まれ持ったものや遺伝的なものも少しはあるでしょう。神様からの贈り物と言う人もいるかもしれません。ただ、お金ではなかなか買えないものとはいえ、努力次第では、なんとかなるかもしれません。多少のお金の投資も必要でしょう。

 

We have to remember, among all the factors considered, “life” is among those that we can’t buy. After being born in this world, you already are gifted with the one thing we cannot sell – life itself. Even if someone want’s to buy it with all of the world’s riches we cannot control life with money.

さて。いかがでしたでしょうか。最後に一つ言いたいのですが、私たちがこうして生きている「命」は、絶対お金では買えないものです。これこそ神様から授かったものと言えるでしょう。「お金はいくらでも払いますので、あなたの命を私にください」という人がいたとしても、命は売買できないです。これが一番この世で貴重な、お金では買えないものなのでしょうね。

「お金がすべてだ」はMoney is everythingと言えます。 似た表現がありますので、いくつかご紹介します。   ・Money talks：金が物を言う 【解説】 日本語では、「お金の力/影響力が大きいこと」にたとえて使われますね。直訳は「金が話す」とも言えますが、talkには口語表現として「影響力がある、ものをいう」という意味もあるようで（参考：英辞郎 on the WEB）、お金の影響力がある＝お金が物を言うとなるようです。   ・Money makes the world go round：金は天下の回り物（世の中はお金で回ってる）   ・Money doesn’t grow on trees ：お金は木に生えない　 【解説】 直訳すると、お金は木に生えない（お金になる木は無い）ですが、お金は簡単には稼げないので大事にすべきという、特に「お金の使い過ぎや無駄遣いはやめよう」と警告する諺です。 例）I can’t buy you the newest play station. Money doesn’t’ grow on trees! 最新のプレイステーションは買ってあげられないわ。お金は木に生えないのよ（簡単に買えないのよ）！   ・Money tree ：金のなる木（※気前よくお金を出す人のイメージで、いわゆる「金づる」とも言えます） 【解説】 おとぎ話に出てきそうな「金のなる木」と同じイメージで、「勝手にお金が湧いてくる」ような状況に使えそうです。 例）He is a money tree for her. 彼は彼女の金づるです。   ・Break the bank ：（値段が）高すぎる、お金がかかり過ぎる 【解説】 語源には諸説あり、よく分かりませんでしたが、否定的な意味で「買うにはが高すぎる」「費用が高すぎて破産する」ようなイメージです。 例文を想像すると分かりやすいかもしれません。 例：That PC was very expensive. So, I used a hammer to break my piggybank。 パソコンが高すぎたので、貯金箱をハンマーで壊してまで買った。   このBreak the piggybank（豚の形をした貯金箱）をそのままBreak the bankに置き換えると分かりやすいですね。 要するに、貯金箱を壊してまでしないと買えないほど高額なもの、という意味です。   ・The bank of mum and dad：ママパパ銀行（※親が子供に資金を提供すること） 【解説】 読んで字のごとく、両親に買ってもらったりお金を出してもらうことで、イギリス英語です。英会話のイギリス人の先生から教わりました。少々古い言い方かもしれませんが、カジュアルな表現で、今でも使われる表現のようです。 例）The bank of mum and dad is becoming more common. ママパパ銀行はだんだんと一般的になってきている。
