依存レベルの物欲、食欲、性欲・・・潜在する原因は？
| 何かに依存している状態って、辛いですよね・・・お酒が止められない、ギャンブルが止められない・・・
解決は難しいとは思いますが、このエッセイが少しでも役に立ちますように・・・
今回の単語のポイントは「lust」「gluttony」です。 |
Title: How to control our strong desires…
There are different types of desires among humans, such as appetite, sex, cupidity, the urge/ lust to dominate, etc. Here are some examples,
人には様々な欲―食欲、性欲、金銭欲、支配欲などがあります。例えば、
1. Gluttony： I’m on a diet but I can’t stop eating so much food.
食欲（例：ダイエット中なのに、どうしても食べ過ぎてしまう・・・）
2. Lust： I know he has a girlfriend, but I can’t help seeing him to satisfy my sexual desires.
性欲（例：彼には付き合ってる彼女がいるのは知ってる。でも、どうしても性欲を満たすために彼に会ってしまうの）
3. Hunger for money（＝cupidity)： I don’t have any money, but I can’t stop gambling.
金銭欲（例：お金なんてもう無い、でもギャンブルが止められない）
As for myself, when I was in my 30s, I already had many clothes, but I couldn’t help but stop buying them to the point where I even drew money from my savings.
私も実は、30代のころ、買い物依存症に近い状態で、沢山服があるにも関わらず、買い続けてしまい、結局貯金を崩してまでかっていました。
Normally, these strong desires above feel out of our control. Once we do it, later we might spend a great deal of time to find any excuse in order to justify our actions, that’s why, it’s really difficult to stop ourselves.
通常、上記に上げた過度な欲望とは、自分でコントロールできないレベルなんですよね。結局、買った後、食べた後、ギャンブルして負けた後、自分を正当化するため、いろいろ言い訳を考えます。ですから、自分で「止める」というのは、厳しいものです。
It is said that when our desires such as gambling, sex, food, etc overwhelm us, it means that we have an adrenaline rush. So, in order to control our emotions and desires, “taking deep breaths” would be one effective way to calm ourselves down.
ギャンブル、性欲、食欲といった欲望を抑えきれない時、アドレナリンが出るから、とよく言われます。ですから、この感情と欲望を抑えるために、「深く深呼吸する」と落ち着く・・・らしいです。
But…this is not the key to stop these endless desires, is it? Because, the real reason why people overdo these things is…“what they really really want” is different from these desires: it is NOT drinking alcohol, or buying fashionable dresses, or having a love affair…whatever.
でも、待ってください！こんなことで、欲望なんて抑えられるはずがないと思いません？お酒にしても、買い物にしても、不倫に至ってしまうというような背景には、本当の原因が潜んでいるからです。決して「お酒が飲み足らないから」「洋服が本当に欲しいから」「この人を心から愛しているから」という理由が依存者の求めるものではないからです。
The root causes are said to be related to “mental health issues” , meaning mental illnesses and mental disorders are hidden in these excessive addictions…
本当の原因は、「精神的な問題」に関係すると言われています。〇〇中毒や〇〇依存になる人には、だいたい何らかの深刻な精神的ストレスが潜んでいるということです。
Relating to my past problem – binge-shopping, at that time I had faced an enormous stressful relationship in my office…and after solving it, I gradually reduced my shopping. Now, I don’t need to shop so often!
私が以前買い物依存だった話をしましたが、当時実は職場でとてつもなく大きな人間関係のストレスを感じていました・・・その煩わしい問題がなくなった後、だんだんと買い物が減り、今ではほとんど服も買わなくなりましたよ。
I know, it’s not easy to solve uncontrolled problems we have faced, but we should know that “satisfying our addicted desires such as gambling, unfaithfulness or hopeless romantic relationships, overeating, binge drinking, unnecessary shopping, etc. never ever help to solve the underlying deep routed issues that we may face mentally.
とはいっても、心が病んでしまうような問題は、そう簡単には解決できませんね。ですが、ギャンブル、不誠実な恋愛、過度な食欲、お酒、不必要な買い物、こういう依存に頼っても、何も解決してくれないということは最低限知るべきです。

不可算名詞には２つの意味があります。 （１）非常に強い性的欲求（＝A very strong sexual desire） （２）強い欲望 ※性的なものではない（＝ A very powerful feeling of wanting something）
２つの意味はニュアンスが異なりますので、使い分けとしては、単に「lust」と言う時は、（１）性的要求の方の意味で使われ、（２）なにかに対する強い欲望として使う場合、具体的に言うようです。
例文： （１） His lust is too strong so many women hate him. （=a strong sexual desire） 彼の性欲が強すぎるので、多くの女性は彼を嫌っている。

・gluttony【glˈʌtni】不可算名詞：大食い、暴飲暴食
| –gluttonyについて–
“gluttony”は、暴飲暴食なので、必要以上に食べて飲むことを意味し、少々ネガティブな表現に使われます。 似ている単語に”overeating”がありますが、これは「食べ過ぎる」ことを意味し、「飲みすぎる」という意味は含まないようです。 ちなみに、大食いする人は glutton【glˈʌtn】可算名詞 と言います。 |
