今日は“Be careful～”を使った言い方についてご紹介します。

意味は「注意する」「慎重になる」「気を付ける」などですね。

 

例えば、

 

私の性格は、服の着方（コーディネート）に気を付けることです。

My personality is that I’m careful about the way I dress. 

 

私はミスしないように気を付けているのですが、メールを送る際にうっかりミスをしてしまいます。

I’m careful with making errors, but unwillingly I make errors in sending e-mails.

 

このように、「be careful」に続く前置詞は、上記の赤色箇所のように、

aboutだったりwith だったり、いろいろな前置詞が使われますので、ややこしいと思い、今回取り上げてみました。

 

大きく分けて、3つの言い方があります。

（１）不定詞：be careful to＋動詞の原形（~に気を付ける） 例： John is careful to spend it wisely. ジョンは賢く使うように気を付けている。   Please be careful not to be infected by the Covid-19. コロナウィルスに感染しないように気を付けてくださいね。

 

 

（２）wh－構文（a wh-clause）： be careful ＋about＋ what / who/which/why/where/ how～ 例： John is careful about what he spends. ジョンは費やすものに気を付けている。   He is careful about who he works with. 彼は誰と一緒に働くかについて、気を付けている。   He is very careful about which product he will import. 彼はどの商品を輸入するかにとても気を付けている。   We have to be careful about why we end these contracts. どうしてそれらの契約をやめるかについて気を付けるべきですね。   You need to be careful about where you will move to. どこに引っ越しするかについて気を付ける必要があります。   We should be careful about how we choose people. 私たちは人の選定に気を付けるべきですね。

 

 

（３）前置詞＋動名詞または名詞：be careful of/about/with/in＋~ この前置詞を使う言い方が・・・ややこしいと思いますが、それぞれ下記をご参考にしてください。 【1】 Be careful+前置詞＋名詞のパターン 【2】Be careful+about～ 【3】Be careful+of～ 【4】Be careful + with / in～

 

【1】 Be careful+前置詞＋名詞のパターン   これは、「be careful of ＋名詞」の形、「~に気を付ける」という意味です。

例:
1. Be careful of Friday the 13th.

13日の金曜日に気をつけろよ。

 

2. Be careful of her, you might get in trouble because she is especially self-centered.
 彼女に気をつけろよ、特に自己中だから面倒なことに巻き込まれるぞ。

 

3. Be careful of Nancy. She easily deceives people. And so was I.

ナンシーに気を付けてね。彼女は簡単に人を騙すから。私も騙されたし。

 

4. Be careful of the insect, if it bites you, you feel very itchy. 

その虫に気を付けて。噛まれたらとても痒くなりますから。

 

5. Be careful of the exam, it must have a trick question.

その試験に気を付けてくださいね。ひっかけ問題らしいですから。

 

【2】Be careful+about～ これは先ほど述べたWH疑問文 What(何)、Who（誰）、Which(どれ)、Why(なぜ)、Where(どこ)、How(どのように) にも使われますが、 もう一つ、“be careful about the～”と、“the”が続くケースが多いですね。

例：

I try to be careful about the way I say to him, otherwise I’ll hurt him by my words.

私は彼に対する言い方に気を付けるようにしている。でなければ言葉で傷つけてしまうから。

 

【3】Be careful+of～ このパターンは、“not”と合わせて、起こってほしくないことが続きます。つまり、そうならないために気を付けるという意味で使われます。

例：

1. I always try to be careful of not making any mistakes in e-mail, but still I do.

（メールを送る際、いつも書き間違えないよう気を付けている。それでも間違えてしまう。）

 

2. △He is careful of not forgetting to lock the door.　

※◎ではなく△です。理由は下記をご参考にしてくださいね。

（彼はドアの鍵をかけわすれないように気を付けている。）

間違いではないのですが、

下記の言い方のほうがいいようです。英会話の先生からアドバイスもらいました。
◎He is so careful of remembering locking the door.

（ドアに鍵をかけることを覚えるよう気を付けている。）

 

【4】Be careful + with / in～ “with”も“in”も、何か物事を行う時にそのプロセスに気を付けるという意味があります。

例:
◆With:

I’m so careful with my e-mail writing that I often check several times before sending it.

（私はE-mailを書く際とても気を付けているので、送る前に何度もチェックします。）

 

◆In:

I’m so careful in my e-mail writing that I often check several times before sending it.

（私はE-mailを書く際とても気を付けているので、送る前に何度もチェックします。）

 

～ポイント：実は意味が異なります！～   She is careful with her dress. ※彼女は洋服に気を付ける＝汚さないように、とか破れない様に気を付けるという意味です。   She is careful in wearing dress. ※彼女は着る洋服に気を付ける＝どの服をきるか、服の選択に気を付けるという意味です。 例えばTPOに応じて服を選ぶとか、自分の年齢や体型を考えて選ぶとか・・・です。
