Title: What I Learned From a Drama Entitled “Anatano Butsuga Kokoni”- How Underdogs Can Become Overcomers?

 

This drama series was broadcasted by NHK in Japan. The plot revolves around the life of the protagonist, who is a single mother, and her daughter amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

NHKドラマ「あなたのブツがここに」は、女手一つで娘を育てている主人公を中心に、みんながコロナ禍を生き抜いていくようなドラマでした。

 

The show highlights the day to day struggles that they faced as well as their personal relationships, some of which blossomed and some that could not cope under this new found stress.

毎日家庭内でも職場でもいろいろ何かしら問題が起こります。コロナと言う新たなストレスにも負けずに前に進む人もいれば、そうでない人もいます。

 

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she was fired from her previous job, and had to go through a rigorous job hunt until she finally got a job in the courier company. It wasn’t a piece of cake as some would have imagined. She faced tremendous difficulties and problems in order to master the job and become a professional.

さて、ドラマの話をしますと、コロナで主人公の亜子は前職を解雇され、転職を試みるも厳しい転職活動でした。ようやく見つけたのが宅配業者の仕事。それはわたしたちが想像しているよりも容易いものではなく・・・仕事を覚えるために、とてつもない困難や問題に直面しました。

 

“Delivery” jobs aren’t as simple as they seem. It’s also very demanding such that you have to load huge amounts of parcels and deliver them one by one within a strict time frame. To make things worse, there are annoying, rude or irate customers.

宅配の仕事は一見簡単そうに見えるかもしれませんが、実際はそうではありません。大量の荷物を車に1個1個積み、限られた時間内に1軒1軒配達する作業です。中には面倒くさく、失礼で、怒りをあらわにした顧客だっていますから、対応しなければなりません。

 

There was one who broke his parcel inadvertently after receiving it, and still blamed the courier claiming it was her fault; or another customer whose delivery was scheduled to “morning time”, the uncompromising customer demanded to have the package delivered at exactly 10:00am, and so many more.

例えば、とある男性客。配達してもらった荷物をうっかり落として割ってしまいました。しかし、「これは配達員が落としたんだ！どうしてくれる？」と亜子のせいにしたのです。もう一つの例は、とある女性。配達時間が午前中という枠にも関わらず、「午前10時に持ってきなさいよ」といったように頑なに時間指定を要求するとか。まだまだいろいろありましたが。

 

She had to go through all of these hurdles throughout her career, and still managed to advance her position within the company. Over time she had built the trust and confidence from her customers.

亜子はこれらの仕事を通して、非常に多くの困難を乗り越えなければなりませんでしたが、社内での自分の立ち位置も確立していきました。時間とともに顧客からの信頼関係も築き、自信もついてきました。

 

It is refreshing to watch the underdog win. Whist watching the show my heartstrings were pulled like many other viewers of the show, we were all rooting for her.

このように、一度はうだつが上がらなかった人が前向きに勝ち進んでいくドラマを見るのはすっきりしますね。多くの視聴者さんもそうだったと思いますが、私も心を動かされました。みんなで亜子を応援しましたよね。

 

During the peak of Covid-19 pandemic, almost everyone might have been negatively affected either at work, school, at home or even our personal and mental health. Many have lost valuable things, time, money and people.

コロナ禍で、ほとんどの人が仕事でも、学校でも、家庭でも、精神的にもマイナスの影響を受けたことでしょう。時間、お金、人など・・・失った大事なものもあります。

 

For example, restaurants had to shorten business hours, reduce its operating capacity, resulting to reduced sales and retrenchment of employees which unfortunately led to depression and even suicide for some.

例えば、レストランは営業時間を短縮し、サービス内容を減らすといったような対応を強いられ、その結果売上は下がり、人員も削減することとなりました。中には鬱になったり、自殺する人も出ました。

 

Regardless of social status, whether you’re rich, poor, single, married, widowed, a retiree, a single mother or even a person with disabilities, no one was able to escape the wrath of the pandemic. It felt like we were all hanging by a thread and everyone was on the same boat.

役職にも関係なく、お金持ちでも貧乏でも、独身でも既婚者でも未亡人でも、定年を迎えた人でも、シングルマザーでも、身体に障害を持っている人でも、誰もがこの世界的に及んだ感染症に怒りを覚えたことでしょう。

 

There are many quotes which caught my attention and impressed me. What I learned from the drama is that everyone wants to put the blame on Covid-19. But no matter how much we blame the virus, nothing will change. It won’t solve our worries nor help us stand up on our feet. So everyone shouldn’t be fixated on blaming everything on Covid-19, but instead, set our minds and continue living no matter what happens or what problems or issues the world throws at us.

このドラマを見ていると、関心するセリフが沢山ありました。その中でも特に感じたのは、「みんなコロナのせいにしたがる。でもどれだけウィルスに怒っても、何も変わらない。苦悩や苦痛を取り除いてくれるわけではないし、立ち上がる手助けをしてくれるわけでもない。なんでもコロナのせいにするのは止めて、これから先何が起ころうとも生きていくしかない」ということです。

 

As the famous saying goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. That’s the key to surviving difficult times.

英語には「人生がレモンをくれるなら、それでレモネードを作れ」という有名な諺があります。逆境を乗り越えよ、災い転じて福となすという意味です。

 

And one more thing, my favorite quote from this drama’s main character herself, is what she said when she had to explain the job to the new employee, who lost his confidence and forgot the know-hows of the job, specifically how to load many parcels in a small truck. She said to him, “Just do it every day. Do it every day, then you will know”.

あと一つ、主人公の亜子が言った言葉ですが、新人に仕事を教えている時、なかなか仕事が覚えられず自信を無くしたその後輩に、どうしたらその小さなトラックにこれだけの多くの荷物を積むことができるのかのコツとして、「とにかく毎日やるねん。毎日毎日やっていたら、いつかできるようになる」と言った言葉も大好きです。

 

I couldn’t agree more on this. There are several instances in my life when I, too lost my confidence. But the drama makes me remember that “everyday effort will lead me to becoming a professional in my chosen path.

そうそう！凄く分かる！と思いました。私も過去に多々自信を無くすこともいろいろありましたね。このドラマを見て「毎日少しずつでもやり続けると、いつかこの道でのプロになれる」とあらためて思いました。

 

We can somewhat all relate to being the under dog in our own lives. We should remember that where you have come from does not always determine where you will go. Ultimately it is only you that can determine to what lengths you will go to ‘succeed’.

きっと皆さん一度は弱者に陥ることだってあり得ます。生まれや育ちがあなたの人生を決めることもありますが、必ずしもそうじゃない。あなた自身が、どう思って、どう行動していくかで、輝かしい人生を作っていくのではないでしょうか。

 

～単語について～

【underdog(s)】可算名詞    日本語には「負け犬」という言い方がありますよね。 イメージ的には「負け犬」を想像されやすいかと思いますが、ちょっと異なりまして、   （１）試合などで負けそうな人やチームのこと Ex: In any dramas, underdogs tend to win in the end which moves the audience. （どのドラマでも、負けそうなチームが最後に勝つ傾向にあり、視聴者に感動を与えます）   （２）例えば低所得者などの、社会的弱者 Ex: Some underdogs in society can think outside of the box. 社会的弱者の中には、創造的に考えられる人もいます。   このように、２つの意味があります。

 

【lemon(s)】可算名詞 フルーツの「レモン」以外に、「欠陥品」「魅力のない人」というネガティブな意味でも使われます。   （１）アメリカ英語のスラング：　欠陥品 Ex:　The new machine is a lemon, so I immediately complained to the shop. （新しく買った機械が欠陥品なので、すぐにお店にクレームを入れた）   （２）イギリス英語のスラング：　魅力のない人、バカな人 英会話の先生に聞いたところ、語源は不明ですが、レモンを食べると口をすぼめてしかめっ面になるイメージから、 不親切で愛想も悪く、良い人ではないことを指すのではないかとの考察でした。 そこからレモン＝バカな人、魅力のない人、という言い方に繋がったのではないでしょうか。   ところで、「lemon」とは逆に、褒め言葉として使われるフルーツをご紹介します。 古い言い方らしいですが桃の「peach」が「素晴らしいもの、人」と言う意味らしいですよ。   もう一つ、日本語に箱の中に1つのミカンがあると他のミカンも腐ることを例えて、一人の悪い人がいると周りも悪影響を及ぼすという意味で「腐ったみかん」と表現されることもありますが、英語では、まわりに悪影響を及ぼす、足を引っ張る人のことを bad apple といいますね。
